Slaying Appalachia

My daddy was a Welder at an Oil Refinery in Ashland, Kentucky for forty years of his adult life - until a few years before he retired in his early sixties, and then passed away shortly after retiring - and also with only one big toe. He lost one of his big toes when he had to climb down inside of a smoke stack to repair a tear that had formed in the side of the wall of the metal stack. Suddenly, something fell close to him from the top of the smoke stack, landing on his foot and crushing his big toe. He was rushed to the hospital, where they had to amputate his toe because it was crushed beyond salvage.

Even though he worked in Ashland, Kentucky his whole life, he lived in West Virginia, right across the bridge. The Tri-State area of Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. The Heart of Appalachia.

He would take stainless steel spoons and forks and knives to work with him, and in his spare time on his lunch and break shifts, he would go in his welding space and make the most beautiful stainless steel jewelry - rings and bracelets - from those spoons and forks and knives. It was amazing. He used his actual trade to work a career, whilst also partaking in a hobby involving that career in his spare time.

I take my drive and determination from my dad. He's looking in on me from heaven every day, and I aspire to make him proud of how I chose to live my life and what I chose to do with my time - the energy I brought to his name. The honor I nurture in effort to align with my highest God-given calling.

To honor him in a way that makes up for my failures of honoring him while he was here in the physical.
